Our take

Why we put a boat full of capital on the Hudson.

Here is the uncomfortable truth about regional startup ecosystems: nobody wires money to a place because it's overlooked. Ohio has spent years telling itself it's undervalued, and it may well be. But investors fund what they have seen, met and trust. Being underrated is not a strategy.

So we went where the capital already was. NY Tech Week puts venture firms, family offices and operators in the same few square miles, taking meetings, with their calendars open. Instead of asking them to come to Ohio on a hope, we brought an Ohio room to them, and a boat turned out to be a smart way to do it. It is a hard room to wander out of, and a deck full of people holding drinks beats a panel for starting real conversations.

The mix mattered more than the headline numbers. Some of the firms aboard already had Heartland ties, and plenty came curious. We need both. The ones who already write checks here need proof they're not alone. The curious need a reason to take a first look. And a guest list that ran from venture capital to family offices, venture studios and venture debt matters for a region full of capital-efficient companies that don't all fit the same funding path.

For an Ohio founder, the takeaway is simple. You don't have to move to New York. But someone from home has to be in that room, vouching for the work, and the work at home has to be good enough to vouch for. That is the whole job at Ohio Startup Network: raise the quality of what's coming out of the region, and put outside capital in front of it. The summit is the outside half.

We're also honest about what an afternoon is. It is not a closed round. The scoreboard that counts is checks written and companies backed in the months after, and that's what we'll be watching. More Ohio Startup Network recaps →

Great seeing the Midwest show up strong in NYC. As a Columbus founder and builder, it's exciting to see Ohio, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, and NYC becoming one connected ecosystem. The next generation of great companies won't come from one city — they'll come from the connections between them.

Nothing says NY tech week like venture capital on a yacht! It was a reminder that great companies and great talent exist far beyond the traditional coastal narratives — surrounded by people committed to profit and impact.

A special thank you to … the Ohio Startup Network team for bringing together such a high-quality group of innovators, investors, and ecosystem builders. NYC – PGH – COL – CLE – CHI — that's a conversation worth continuing.
